John’s March Jobs for the Garden
Spring is officially here, and as the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, both the plants and the nursery are beginning to awaken. After a period of dormancy, this is one of our favorite times of the year as we can return to the garden and prepare for what we hope will be a fantastic season ahead.
Jobs for the garden…
Bughouses – You can either build your own with bamboo canes or buy one. Great for butterflies, bees, bugs or around a hedgehog house.
Planting – The perfect time to add new plants into your garden to help give colour and interest.
Build a pond – It can be as small or large as you fancy but great for a garden eco-system.
Benches – It’s lovely to incorporate different spots in your garden where you can read, have a brew, or just take in your space.
Gardening Routine – Now is a great time to start planning your gardening tasks and to dos, and establishing a good routine, now the days are getting lighter.
Cutting back – You can now cut back any perennial or grasses that still have their old growth on them, and compost the clippings.
Mother Nature’s Compost – It’s always good to make your own compost from cuttings, leaves, old foliage and more.
Wildflowers – You can sow seeds in a small patch of flowerbed to have a mix of wildflowers. Yet another way to attract pollinators.
Prune Dogwoods – Cut them back to 6 inches / 15 cm at the end of March for colourful new growth.
Sow vegetables – Now is a great time to sow a number of vegetables such as beetroot, kale, spinach, peppers, peas, onions and much more. Growing and then eating your own food is really something special.
Happy gardening!
