Becoming RHS Master Grower & Creating Award-Winning Planting Schemes

Tuesday 16th April 2024, 9.00am-11.00am

£45

Join nurseryman John Foley, as he tells the story of how he and his team won the coveted title of RHS Master Grower in 2023.

He’ll be going into detail about our hardy perennial growing process, the non-use of polytunnels, greenhouses or in fact, any shelter at all…

He’ll discuss planting and growing techniques, tips and tricks, as well as touching on plant combinations to achieve certain looks and styles…all of which have contributed to us winning Master Grower and numerous top accolades at Tatton Park, Harrogate and Southport alike.

Master Grower 2023

Celebrating the UK’s finest, specialist plant growers and nurseries in the UK, the RHS Master Grower scheme bestows recognition upon those who go above and beyond, nurturing beautiful, hardy, and healthy plants while embracing a skilled and sustainable approach to production.

Holden Clough Nurseries’ roots trace back to the kitchen garden of Holden Clough House. Evolving into an alpine nursery in the 1920s, it found its way into the hands of the Foley family in 1978, where John would immerse himself in plants: propagating and growing them from a very young age.

He took over the reins of The Nursery in 2009 with his wife Kate, and in 2012, he was named the first BBC Young Gardener of the year. Since then, John and Holden Clough have won consecutive gold medals at Tatton Park Flower show, for 10 years in a row, as well as further golds and ‘Best in Show’ awards at Southport, and Harrogate Flower Show.

The Nursery has earned much recognition for its extensive range of hardy perennials, with the ethos of, "If it grows at Holden Clough, it’ll grow (almost) anywhere." Plants naturally start their journey in the Growing Field before moving through to The Nursery & The Frameyard to be displayed, before they find their way to their new gardens & homes.

Join us for this interesting and informative talk from the Master Grower himself, and learn how to successfully grow and nurture award-winning plants, shrubs, and trees that will withstand, and thrive, in our great British climate.

Price includes:

Tea / Coffee and a yummy slice of cake / pastry from the Reading Room Kitchen, as well as 10% off plants on the day you visit.

Q&A session: You’ll have the opportunity to ask John anything you’d like about pruning, plants and more when the talk has ended.

Arrive by 9am for a hot drink & cake/pastry. The talk will begin at 9.30am
